Rug pads are available in al styles and materials and, while they all seem to act as a protective barrier between a rug and a laminate floor, they are not all safe for laminate floors. In order for a rug pad to be safe for laminate floors, it should have no risk of sticking to or staining the laminate floor. Many people experience their rug pad sticking to their laminate floor and making their mark on the floor. In this post, I will review why some rug pads stick to laminate floors.
A woman wrote in to state that upon moving a few of her rugs, she noticed a bad marking on her laminate floor. She wrote to ask why this had happened and, after asking some simple questions about her rug pads, I concluded what the problem was. The non-slip rug pads out there that people think are rubber, actually are not. She purchased her rug pads from a big box store and thought that since they looked and felt like rubber, that they were rubber. In reality, the rug pads that she bought for her laminate floor were plastic imported from China. Once the plastic is made into the rug pad, it is then coated with an adhesive. The reason for this adhesive to to make the rug pad prevent slipping. While the adhesive may prevent rugs from slipping on laminate floors, it also makes its mark on the floor.
The marking of rug pads on a laminate floor is a kind of melting of the pad onto the floor. The plastic and adhesive combination within the rug pad acts as a melting agent that causes the rug pad to stain any laminate floor. One of the biggest reasons that these types of damaging rug pads are so popular is due to their price point. Since the rug pads are made of plastic and made in China, they are relatively inexpensive, making them quite attractive for big box stores to stock and sell. Another attraction to these rug pads is that they are offered as already cut in various sizes, again making it easy for big box stores to stock on their shelves.
If you ever hear anyone warning of using a rubber rug pad on your laminate floor, chances are they are referring to these plastic rug pads that again look and feel like rubber. One smell will definitely distinguish them from natural rubber rug pads as they possess quite a chemical or adhesive odor. Real natural rubber rug pads are completely safe for all laminate floors and should not be confused with the plastic rug pads from China.
Finally, if your rug does not have a slipping and sliding issue on your laminate floor, then you don’t even need a natural rubber rug pad. There are quality all felt rug pads that do not contain adhesives, latex or rubber and these are excellent for larger rugs, heavier rugs or rugs with furniture holding them to the laminate floor. Whichever type of rug pad you choose for your laminate floor, stay away from any plastic, nylon or polyester rug pads that most likely will stain your laminate floor at some point in time.
